Constitutional Background

The constitution was adopted on 12 July 1991 by the 7th Grand National Assembly of Bulgaria, and defines the country as a unitary parliamentary republic. It has been amended five times (in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2015).

History and News

  • 2020: The parliament rejects Draft New Constitution.
  • 2015: Amendments of the Constitution (Art. 130a-c [Organization of the Supreme Judicial Court], Art. 150 para 4).
  • 2008: Amendment of the Constitution (Art. 8 [military forces]).
  • 2007: Bulgaria becomes member of the European Union (Amendment of Art. 22, 62 para 2, Art. 84, Art. 130, Art. 132a, Art. 141).
