Constitutional Background
The constitution was adopted on 12 July 1991 by the 7th Grand National Assembly of Bulgaria, and defines the country as a unitary parliamentary republic. It has been amended five times (in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2015).
History and News
- 2020: The parliament rejects Draft New Constitution.
- 2015: Amendments of the Constitution (Art. 130a-c [Organization of the Supreme Judicial Court], Art. 150 para 4).
- 2008: Amendment of the Constitution (Art. 8 [military forces]).
- 2007: Bulgaria becomes member of the European Union (Amendment of Art. 22, 62 para 2, Art. 84, Art. 130, Art. 132a, Art. 141).
- 2006: Amendments of the Constitution (Art. 70 para 2, Art. 84, Art. 91a [ombudsman], Art. 127, Art. 150 para 3).
- 2005: Amendments of the Constitution (Art. 4 para 3 [participation in the European Union], Art. 42 [Election for members of the European Parliament], Art. 85, Art. 105 paras 3 and 4).
- 2003: Amendments of the Constitution (Art. 129 para 4, 5, 6).
- 12 July 1991: Adoption of the new constitution.
